Monarda citriodora (Lemon Mint) is an erect-growing, clump-forming annual/biennial/perennial wildflower that can grow to a height of 2.6 ft. Lemon mint has square stems and leaves in an opposite arrangement on the stem, which are characteristic of Monarda species. The stems of this wildflower are pubescent. Monarda citriodora blooms in late spring/midsummer with whitish to pale lavender flowers. Lemon Mint is typically found in mesic to dry soils of gravelly hillsides, pastures, and rocky or sandy prairies. Monarda citriodora provides pollen and nectar for bees, butterflies, and hummingbirds. This native mint species is an excellent addition to pollinator gardens and meadows, particularly for areas ranging from Kansas to Texas and west to Arizona. Monarda citriodora is a member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family. The genus name honors Seville botanist, Nicholas Monardes, while the species name citriodora means "having a citrus odor."
