Ilex verticillata, PA Ecotype

Winterberry, PA Ecotype

$156.00 /lb

Ilex verticillata (Winterberry) is an erect-growing deciduous shrub that typically grows to 16.3 ft. Winterberry blooms in late spring/early summer with white flowers that give way to berries containing multiple seeds. After the leaves drop in the fall, the red fruit of Ilex verticillata stands out against the brown landscape of wetlands and wet meadows. By mid-January, cedar waxwings and other birds will have stripped Winterberry branches of their fruitt. Ilex verticillata can be found from Maine to Minnesota and Florida’s panhandle to Louisiana in full sun to partial shade in mesic to wet sites, such as moist woods, swamps, bogs, and wet shores. Winterberry is an excellent component of wildlife-friendly wet meadow and wetland mixes. Ilex verticillata is a member of the holly (Aquifoliaceae) family.
