Agastache nepetoides (Yellow Gianty Hyssop) is an erect-growing, clump-forming perennial herbaceous species. The stems of Agastache nepetoides are square, and the leaves are pubescent (hairy) on the bottom surface. Yellow Giant Hyssop is our tallest and one of our latest blooming mints. Agastache nepetoides can grow to a height of 5.7 ft. and blooms in late May/early September with greenish-yellow flowers. Yellow Giant Hyssop naturally occurs from Nebraska and Oklahoma east to North Carolina and New York. Natural populations of Agastache nepetoides are found in open woods, moiist thickets, roadsides, along streams, fields, and meadows. Yellow Giant Hyssop attracts butterflies and is deer resistant. If grown as a specimen plant, Agastache nepetoides can lodge in high winds. Yellow Giant Hyssop makes a nice addition to wood’s edge meadows and mesic to upland meadows in full sun, including those with tall grasses. Agastache nepetoides is a member of the mint (Lamiaceae) family. The genus name is derived from the Greek words “agan”, meaning “very much”, and “stachys”, meaning “ear of wheat”, referring to the appearance of the flower species. The species name nepetoides refers to this plant appearing like catnip, which is the genus Nepeta.
