Echinachea purpurea (Purple Coneflower) s an erect-growing, clump-forming perennial that typically grows to 5.2 ft. A well-known natiive, Purple Coneflower blooms from midsummer to early fall with reddiash purple petals that attract a variety of native bees and butterflies, including monarchs. Purple Coneflower may be found from Ohio to North Carolina and Oklahoma to Iowa, but can be grown outside of this region. Echinacea purpurea grows in full sun to partial shade in mesic to dry soils of meadows, open woods, prairies, and roadsides. A Purple Coneflower seedling can be easy to recognize with our Ernst Seeds Seedling Gallery. Echinacea purpurea is deer resistant and we include it in our pollinator-friendly partial shade to full sun upland and deer resistant meadow mixes. Purple Coneflower is a member of the aster (Asteraceae) family. The genus name Echinacea is derived from echinos, the Greek word for hedgehog or sea urchin, while the species name purpurea means purple.
