Joe Pye Weed, PA Ecotype

Eupatorium fistulosum (Joe Pye Weed), also known as Eutrochium fistulosum, is a tall, erect-growing, clump-forming native perennial. Joe Pye Weed typically grows to 7.7 ft, blooming in late summer/early fall with pink/purplish flowers that attract butterflies. Eupatorium fistulosum has hollow stems and leaves in a whorled arrangement (more than three leaves at each leaf attachment) on the stem. Seeds of Joe Pye Weed have a pappus (parachute) that aids in wind dissemination. Eupatorium fistulosum grows in partial shade to full sun in mesic to wet soils of floodplains, meadows, roadsides, and thickets. Joe Pye Weed can be found from Maine to Florida and Texas to Michigan. Eupatorium fistulosum tolerates deer browse. Joe Pye Weed is appropriate for pollinator-friendly riparian, storm basin, wet meadow, and wetland mixes. Eupatorium fistulosum is a member of the aster (Asteraceae) family. The alternate genus name Eutrochium is derived from the Greek words eu and troche, which mean well and wheel-like, respectively, referring to its leaves. The species name fistulosum means hollow.
