Lanceleaf Coreopsis

Coreopsis lanceolata (Lanceleaf Coreopsis) is an erect-growing, clump-forming native that typically grows to 2.4 ft. Lanceleaf Coreopsis is known for its long history of use as a perennial bedding plant. Coreopsis lanceolata blooms in late spring/early summer with yellow flowers that attract butterflies. Lanceleaf Coreopsis grows in partial shade to full sun in mesic to dry soils of thickets, fields, clearings, and along roadsides. Coreopsis lanceolata can be found from North Carolina to Florida and Texas to Wisconsin; most likely, not native to Virginia. Lanceleaf Coreopsis is used in pollinator-friendly upland full sun and partial shade meadow mixes, as well as deer resistant meadow mixes. Short stature makes Coreopsis lanceolata appropriate for residential meadow mixes. Lanceleaf Coreopsis seedlings have distinct leaves that make identification easy using the Ernst Seedling Gallery. Coreopsis lanceolata is a member of the aster (Asteraceae) family. The genus name Coreopsis is derived from the Greek words koris, meaning bug, and opsis, meaning like, referring to the appearance of the seed. The species name lanceolata means lance shaped.
